As a 5‑year‑old, I remember holding one thing in my hand as we deplaned from our long flight from Hong Kong to America: a banana, the leftovers from our lunch.
Before landing in America, I had never had a banana to myself. So that banana felt like a symbol of possibility—a small, sweet sign that something better might be ahead. And America has become just that for me, my family, and the extended families we later sponsored.
When I go to choir, a picnic, or a sporting event, I sometimes bring bananas. For me, they represent hope for a better world, one better than we have yet known. And bananas are useful when we’re building bridges to what’s next.
